Mangroves in the Maldives are normally found in depressions of islets locally known as Kulhi. Some species of mangroves also grow along island lagoons. Mangrove areas are highly productive ecosystem contributing to the food chains of atoll islands. They are also important to the atoll ecosystems, as they filter out silt, nutrients and sand that would otherwise go out to the house reef around the islands, suffocate corals and encourage algal growth.

Most of the native plants in the Maldives are salt tolerant. Most of the plants that grow on the coastal vegetation belt around islands although very salt tolerant but differ that of mangroves. This was quite visible in the 2004 Asia's tsunami disaster, most of the native plants survived leaving dead all the introduced and naturalized plants in tsunami-affected islands.

Mangroves in the Maldives are either growing along lagoons or in depressions, and are most extensive on the northern atolls. At least 13 mangrove species are found, including kan’doo (Bruguiera cylindrica), bodavaki (Bruguiera gymnorhiza), ran’doo (Rhizophora mucronata), kulhlava (Sonneratia caseolaris), burevi (Lumnitzera racemosa), karamana (Ceriops tagal) and thela (Exoecaria agallocha).

Supremely skillful but often frustrating in his play, Cristiano Ronaldo dos Santos Aveiro was signed by Manchester United with the cash received from the sale of David Beckham to Real Madrid.Very much bought as a development player, Ronaldo has had to learn to be a team player rather than concentrate on his individual skill.He also came in for a lot of criticism for the ease at which he would fall the ground when tackled, especially when riding the challenge would have opened up the defence.While he has certainly improved both these aspects of his game he does still frustrate his manager, Sir Alex Ferguson.Ronaldo, much famed for his tendency to try the 'step-over', is without doubt a hugely talented player who has the ability to become one of the best in the world, but he must harness his talent and learn from those around him.The right-sided winger wonder is another from the Sporting Lisbon production line, following the likes of Luis Figo and Joao Pinto into a big European move, Ronaldo remains regarded as one of the brightest talents in European football.In recent years the Sporting production has churned them out even more rapidly and Ronaldo follows former team-mates Hugo Viana and Ricardo Quaresma in moving to a big move away from Portugal. Indeed both were contemporaries of his in Lisbon - he and Viana both made their debuts in the same game for their former club.Ronaldo's talents have been hailed in his homeland for well over a decade - he was the subject of a transfer at the age at eight in his native island of Madeira. Ronaldo's first big move came at the age of 11 when club Nacional ran into trouble when paying Sporting Lisbon a £25,000 fee for defender Franco.On August 15, 2001 he was handed his Sporting debut as a 16-year-old by then coach Laszlo Boloni against Second Division B side Atletico. His league debut saw him score twice in a 3-0 victory over Moreirense and then hit a late winner in a 2-1 defeat of Boavista.He was soon to play a starring role for the Portuguese Under-17 side at the European Championships.The 2002/03 season was his first full run in the side and his strength, skill and pace led to him becoming one of Europe's most coveted talents. His two-footedness and ability to play on either wing or as a support striker made him the ideal candidate for Sir Alex Ferguson in his search for support for Ruud Van Nistelrooy's goalscoring exploits.Ferguson had been eyeing the player for a year when his hand was forced by interest from other leading European clubs in Real Madrid and Juventus into invoking United's close relationship with Sporting and splashed out £12.24m for the teenager, beating the British record set by Viana the year before.Sporting were prepared to sell the player for such a price but they had wanted to keep him and had even cashed in Quaresma to Barcelona to retain Ronaldo's services. But the lure of Old Trafford was strong.A wizardly showing in a pre-season game against United had his future team-mates drooling and within a week he was one of them, becoming United's first-ever Portuguese player. A young man named after an American president, he will hope to become one of United and Europe's precedent players.He made his United debut in a 4-0 thrashing of Bolton at Old Trafford. He replaced Nicky Butt just after the hour and produced a mesmerising performance. Three of United's goals came after the young star's introduction.Ronaldo did struggle at times in the first half of the season as he adapted to life in England, but after the turn of the year really decided to turn on the style.His trademark footwork set the Premiership slight, and earned him a place in Portugal's squad for Euro 2004.Although he began the tournament from the bench, a goal and assist in the first two games against Greece and Russia earned him a starting place for the group decided against Spain.Ronaldo also found the back of the net in the semi-final against Holland, although their was heartbreak for the winger when Portugal lost in the final to Greece.Along with Wayne Rooney, Ronaldo was one of the real stars of Euro 2004 - and he can only get better with age at Old Trafford.At times he does tend to over-elaborate on the ball - something else he will learn to improve on with time.He missed the start of the 2004/05 season due to his controversial inclusion in Portugal's squad for the Olympic Games.The was further controversy that season when the player's agent demanded talks began over a new contract, but considering he still had years to run on his first deal the United board was less than impressed.Both player and club denied there was any disagreement, but it truth it more than likely was the case.The winger was linked with both Barcelona and Real Madrid as the uncertainty dragged on - but he finally signed a deal to run until the summer of 2010.And a few months later he was investigated by police after a woman made allegations of rape at a London hotel - the player always denied the claims and he was never charged with any offence.He made his 100th United appearance in 2005/06.

Maldives anger over topless party

Sir Philip's party cost millions of dollars, reports say A leading opposition group in the Maldives has strongly criticised a lavish party held there last week by one of Britain's top businessmen.

The party was attended by a host of celebrities, including the singers George Michael and Jennifer Lopez. It allegedly featured topless dancers, a giant Buddha statue and copious amounts of champagne. Critics say that such an event was incompatible with the conservative Muslim culture of the islands. Lobster thermidor The party was hosted at an exclusive resort by the British tycoon Sir Philip Green - one of Britain's wealthiest businessmen - to celebrate his 55th birthday. It is estimated to have cost in the region of $10m (£5m). Guests were reportedly treated to the finest vintage Pol Roger champagne and a cabaret performance by George Michael. George Michael was reportedly paid in excess of $500,000 to perform. At one end of one of the dance floors a solid granite statue of the Buddha, 11m-tall, had been erected as around 100 guests ate lobster thermidor. The party was held on three stages and also featured pagodas and two smaller Buddhas. More than 500 people were hired to deal with the construction of the party venue, with hundreds more working on catering, flower arrangements and security. The festivities were reported to include a topless dance routine and a brilliant firework display.
'Over the top' Critics in the Maldives say that such merry-making is out of place in a conservative Muslim country. "This party was completely over the top," said Maldivian Democratic Party spokesman Ahmed Moosa. "Maldives people are easily shocked and strong in their Muslim faith," he said. Critics argue that the Buddha was incongruous in a Muslim country "Scantily clad women and excessive drinking are not culturally acceptable." Mr Moosa stressed that he was not making a political point in his criticisms. "I think my views on this issue represent a wide cross-section of views across the country regardless of party affiliation," he said. Mr Moosa said that he found it "objectionable" that many of the celebrities and wealthy guests who attended the ceremony arrived in the Maldives by private jets. "With so much emphasis on reducing greenhouse emissions around the world, their mode of travel - like their partying - smacks of decadence," he said. 'Happiness' The Maldivian Democratic Party has also complained that the Buddha statue brought into the country for the party was in contravention of the law, which prohibits the promotion of any faith apart from Islam. The Maldives government was unavailable to comment on criticisms surrounding the party, but last week President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom was reported to have extended birthday greetings in a telephone call to Sir Philip. The president was quoted by local newspapers as saying that Sir Philip's visit to the Maldives would help bolster the country's tourism industry. He expressed his "happiness" that Sir Philip had chosen the Maldives for his birthday celebrations. The businessman is reported to have thanked the president for his telephone call, and said that the Maldives was the most beautiful place he had ever visited. A spokeswoman in Sir Philip's private office said that he was unaware of any regulations concerning the importation of Buddhas to the Maldives, and that the party was held at a private location.

Male, the capital island of Maldives, is gearing up to welcome the entry of a long-awaited international hotel brand, to meet a market need among seasoned business travellers, airline crew and stopover visitors seeking high standards of comfort and service.The new-build Holiday Inn Male marks the entry of InterContinental Hotels Group’s (IHG) first hotel in Maldives. The property will be developed by Male Hotel Associates Sourcing Limited. Following the recent successful procurement of financing by the local partners, construction of the hotel is expected to begin by 2nd quarter of this year, and operations scheduled to commence by late 2008.IHG which will be managing the hotel as a non-equity partner, has teamed up with partners from Male Hotel Associates Sourcing Limited, led by Abdul Sattar Ali and Lawrence Lee. Ali, a Maldivian, is the Founding Partner and Director of one of Maldives largest and fastest growing graphic design, advertising and publishing firms. He is also Director and majority shareholder of Aribeach Resort on Ari Atoll. Lee, an industry veteran who has played key roles in a number of successful hospitality property acquisitions, is also the former owner of award-winning White Sands Resort & Spa.According to the Maldive Tourism Promotion Board, the well-timed entry of the Holiday Inn brand into Male coincides with the robust growth of Maldives’ vibrant tourism industry. The archipelago is experiencing a development boom with 35 new islands released for tourism at an estimated budget of US$600 million.Deputy Minister of Tourism and Civil Aviation, Mr Abdul Hameed Zakariyya, said, “Maldives’ natural appeal as a beach, diving and honeymoon destination of exceptional beauty, has seen tourism grow into our biggest industry. We are expecting a sustained growth momentum of about 7% annually over the next few years. Demand will clearly exceed the current capacity of 16,000 rooms. We welcome the entry of esteemed global players like InterContinental Hotels Group with its renowned Holiday Inn brand. Companies like IHG play a role as a tourism partner in attracting tourists from new markets.
